Adventure Medical Kits Sol Survival Blanket

This is Adventure Survival Blanket an excellent and packable emergency blanket designed to accommodate two people. Much more durable than the cheap mylar blankets, this blanket is more resistant to tears and punctures, though one should still be careful when handling it. Not a bivy, this is a rectangular sheet that offers tremendous flexibility. These are the features I especially like:

* Large size - Measuring a full 5 X 8 feet, this is a large sheet that offer the flexibility to shelter two people together. With this size, you can also use it to create an emergency shelter, use for signaling, collect water (either from rain or a condensation trap), etc. I prefer the larger two-person size as it gives me more options for its use. I can always cut it down slightly to use the material for other things in addition to sheltering.

* Durability - This need not be a single use item. Unlike cheaper emergency blankets, this is tear resistant material that will still reflect body heat. (up to 90% according to the manufacturer) While it is still very thin, a minor tear or hole does not spell the end of its usefulness. It can be re-folded and placed back into its bag.

* Color - Reflective on the inside, it is a highly visible red on the outside.

* Instructions - I really like that instructions for use are actually printed on the sheet itself: Nothing to get lost or misplaced, the instructions are right there and they cover more than just sheltering from the cold. This alone could be a lifesaver for some.

* Reusable bag - The bag that this sheet comes in is tough and resealable. Not only does it allow you to fold and store the blanket, but you can also use it to collect water, use as a sucking wound bandage, etc.

One doesn't need to be completely lost and in dire peril to use this; there are many circumstances whether on a day hike or longer excursion where this piece of kit could come in handy to make you more comfortable, safer, or more secure. Compact and durable, this blanket weighs only a few ounces; as a disaster preparedness item, this belongs in your day hike pack, camping gear, and car and home kits. Highly recommended.More detail

RESUSCITATOR CPR ADSAFELF American Diagnostic Corporation

This ADC ADSAFE Pocket Rescusitator is Perfect to have on hand in a drawer, car, backpack, gym bag, or first aid kit. Unless you're putting this in a pair of cargo pants, though, I wouldn't call it "pocket-sized." The mask itself is pliable, includes an O2 port, and a neck strap. The hard case latches closed and the orange color makes it easy to find.

As an added bonus  not listed in the product description,a pair of powder-free nitrile exam gloves (latex free) and an alcohol cleaning wipe are included in the case. I was looking for a mask kit that included the gloves, so these were a pleasant surprise, making the product even more convenient where gloves aren't normally available (e.g., workplace, car, gym bag).

The mask is reusable, so long as it is properly cleaned (soapy water, followed by a soak in bleach solution according to the enclosed instructions). The filter valve must be replaced after use. Replacement filter valves.he case fits in my spiewak emt pant pockets comfortably. It is a well built item, the mask has a tackiness in texture that allows a good seal to the face. It is a one time use mask, yet affordable, and is the chosen product of local first responders.

These work great in theory and training, that dummy is never for want of air! With AHA switching all civilians to compressions only CPR these might only be found in hospitals and doctor's offices soon, who knows?however have a health care provider level cert and like to ventilate once every 30, You also will like not having strangers vomit and/or saliva in my mouth, therefore You must  have one of these. These are also great to stick in an out of the way place in your ruck in case your buddy (who's been to Thailand -a lot) suddenly needs ventilation. You will like, even love (in a brotherly way) most of the guys I serve with.More detail

SAS Survival Handbook, Revised Edition: For Any Climate, in Any Situation

This book was written by a professional soldier who was in the SAS, or the Special Air Service. For those not in the know, that's an elite unit of the British Army trained to carry out operations in ALL parts of the world. Eventually, the author became a survival instructor to the SAS, so you can be sure that this guy knows his stuff.

The book covers all you'd ever want to know about the essentials of surviving in climates such as: the polar region, mountains, seashores, islands, tropical regions, or even at sea. Here's few of the many topics the book covers:

-food, what you can and can't eat
-animal tracking with numerous pics
-color pics of edible plants
-pictures of traps and how to trap things
-how to handle animals you've killed for food
-how to make a camp and various shelters
-knot tying pics
-first aid
-color pics of medicinal plants
-picures of dangerous/poisonous critters
-things to have in a survival kit

A very handy resource for anybody who enjoys outdoor/wilderness activities, it's just a darn good thing to have around in case of emergencies- or even just to look at the pictures! Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff if you have a shoulder problem that is interfering with your outdoor activities.

Emergency Fire Starter

Emergency fire stater
Save up dryer lint, and if it is not raining/damp, use the dryer lint to start fires, not the magnesium. In fact, if you're experienced you can dampen the dryer lint in flammable liquid and put it in a ziploc bag(just be careful), and then you can still use the lint in damp conditions. As far as fire starters go, the magnesium is probably the best way to light a fire in wet conditions. This thing is also simple to use.

First, you have to shave off the black coating of the sparker, which is the cylindrical shaped thing on the side. You will want to remove as much of it as possible. This will allow you to then get good sparks (with the coating it does not spark).Next, you shave off some of the magnesium block onto where you would like to start the fire.

Lastly, use the dull end of the saw, and scrape it consistently across the sparker, which should emit a decent amount of sparks. It may take a couple tries to get sparks, but usually doesn't take more than a few tries to get the magnesium lit.Obviously it is not the easiest way to light a fire(as opposed to just a lighter), but is one of the best ways in wet conditions. It is always nice to have as a backup as well.

The flint seems to have a coating on it, which may need to be worn off before good sparks will be produced. After it was a bit "worn", we were getting heavy sparks which would ignite dry tinder, even without the magnesium, most likely (though this was not tested, as tinder was moist). The magnesium gave substantial heat and height to the first flames, and the bundle went up very quickly.

Even those used to using flint and strikers should think about the addition of magnesium to their kit. In wetter weather, it provides a great burst of heat that might be the critical "push" to getting a good fire started--especially lacking proper tinder.More detail
